How is everyone doing? It’s been almost three months since the last newsletter. Covid and in particular the Omicron strain, rampant all over the world a few months back, are now also on the decline in Japan. In addition, Japan’s booster vaccination drive is well underway, with more than 30% of residents having received this third dose so far. Unfortunately, tourists are still not being admitted into the country, but I and many others expect this restriction will not last much longer.
Japan is in full swing this spring, gloriously rising from the winter cold, impervious to past Covid-related global hiccups. The cherry blossoms in big cities such as Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, and Osaka are expected to be at peak between the 20th and 25th, so by the time this newsletter reaches you, cherry blossoms are sure to be prancing their beauty across Japan.
Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, we here at Luxury Travel Japan have participated in many business meetings with travel agencies and agents from around the world at events sponsored by the Japan National Tourism Organization. Over the past year, we have joined online events in Italy, Australia, Malaysia, USA, Philippines, and also attended the Japan Luxury Showcase and Visit Japan Travel Mart. All in all, we were able to talk with more than 150 travel agents and agencies from around the world over the course of a year.
In talking with travel agents abroad, we found Japan to still be as popular as it was before Covid. In fact, even during still uncertain times, we have continued to receive many inquiries. Surprisingly, many customers who booked their trip before Covid shut down international travel are still waiting to come to Japan on a postponed itinerary, having never even canceled in the first place. This despite the fact that customers who booked trips in countries other than Japan tended to cancel immediately. After hearing such stories, we were heartened that the popularity of traveling to Japan remains strong.
