Staying overnight at Buddhist temple has been very popular recently at home and overseas. To stay at temple is called ‘Shukubo’ in Japanese.
Shukubo is a lodging house for pilgrims at Japanese Buddhist temple components. Originally, it was for only Buddhist monks but during Heian period (794-1185), the visiting temples and shrines facility became common activities, nobility, samurai and even general started to visit, so the operator began to change from monks to half-monk and half-common managers in relation to particular temples.
In Edo period (1606-1868), Oise Mairi (a group pilgrimage to Ise-jingu Shrine) and Zenko-ji Temple tours became popular, forming a kind of tourist industry by preparing shukubo at large temples in various places, forming connections between certain regions with certain shukubo.
In recent years, Koyasan and other shukubo have tendency toward competing high quality and there are Shukubo with open-air hot spring. However, in Shikoku-hachijuhakkasho which is a multi-site pilgrimage of 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kukai (also Kobo Daishi) on the island of Shikoku, Japan, many temples are managing Shukubo for pilgrim directly.
Most popular shukubo in Japan is at Mt. Koya (Koya-san). Koya-san is in Wakayama prefecture to the south of Osaka, settled in 819 by Kukai. Koya-san is primarily known as the world headquarters of the Koya-san Shukubo sect of Japanese Buddhism.
Shukubo are throughout in Japan. You can also experience staying at temple in Kamakura only about 1 hour from Tokyo sta.
